I’ll give you a kitchen interior design secret: they look awesome because they’re professionally styled!
Think about it: without anything on the countertops or the kitchen table, they seem kind of blank, right? Now, add a bowl of lemons or a bouquet of fresh flowers. They bring out the colors in the room, adding visual interest and texture. How do you style your kitchen to keep it looking magazine-worthy?
Fresh flowers are the number one pro designer styling secret for kitchens. You can choose any bloom you want, but I like to choose ones that bring out other colors in the room or add contrast. Have a white kitchen with blue window treatments? Try hydrangeas. Have a sleek, contemporary kitchen? White orchids or calla lilies are perfect. Want a fresh country chic look in your farmhouse kitchen? Try bright sunflowers when they’re in season.
If you have the budget, you can hire a local florist to bring in a new floral arrangement every week or two. It’s a luxury, but such a special and worthwhile one – especially when it’s enjoyed in a room where your family spends so much time. If your budget doesn’t allow for that, you can get gorgeous blooms at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s for great prices. Even a few simple stems can make a big statement.
Pick out a beautiful bowl (or have your designer choose one!) and fill it up with bountiful fruit. Your family is more likely to choose healthy snacks like apples and grapes when they’re sitting out on the counter, and the bright colors add warmth to your space.
Lemons are one of my favorite fruits to decorate with: their burst of yellow brightens up any space, especially in a glass canister or white porcelain bowl.
In a space like a kitchen, there’s a fine line between tastefully decorated and busily cluttered. Take a few of your prettiest or best-used cookbooks and stack them on the counter, spines out. Top them with a 5×7” family photo in a beautiful frame. You now have a perfect vignette, without cluttering up your whole counter. Just make sure that these little kitchen decorating moments are not on your most-used countertop space, or they’ll get in the way.
It depends on the appliance. If you’ve wanted that cornflower blue Kitchenaid mixer forever, by all means, leave it on the counter. If it’s the old toaster you use once every three months, tuck it away in a cabinet. Only use things you feel add to the style and vibe of your kitchen.
